Early CareerValentyn Berkovskiy is a Ukrainian political figure and a retired colonel. He graduated from the A.F. Mozhaysky Military Engineering Academy in 1978 and served at the Baikonur and Plesetsk Cosmodromes from 1978 to 1993.
Military Service and Promotions
In 1993, Berkovskiy graduated from the F.E. Dzerzhinsky Military Academy. From 1993 to 1995, he served in the Armaments Department of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense. He was promoted to the position of Group Chief at the Strategic Nuclear Forces Administrative Management Center in 1995.
Government Roles
Berkovskiy held various government positions, including:- Head of the Group at the Strategic Nuclear Forces Administrative Management Center (1995-1996)
- Officer at the Defense and Mobilization Department, Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine (1996-2000)
- State Expert at the Foreign Policy Aspects of National Security Department, National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (2000-2001)
- Head of Department at the State Commission on Defense Industry Complex Issues (2001-2003)
- Head of the Defense Industry Policy Department, Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine (2003-2005)
- Deputy Head of the Industrial Policy Department, Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine (2005)
- Deputy Head of the Main Safety and Defense Policy Service, President's Secretariat of Ukraine (2005-2007)
Defense Ministry Appointments
In October 2007, Berkovskiy was appointed Deputy Minister of Defense. He served in this role until June 2009, when he was appointed First Deputy Minister of Defense.
Arrest and Controversy
In August 2010, Berkovskiy was arrested in connection with an investigation into illegal privatization. He has since been a state employee of the 2nd rank.
