Biography of Walter Schachner

Football Career

Walter Schachner is an Austrian football player, forward, and coach. He began his football career at the club "Alpine," which was playing in the second division of Austria at the time. In 1978, he moved to Vienna's "Austria" club. His first season with the capital club was successful as they won the Austrian championship with a 14-point lead, and Schachner became the league's top scorer with 24 goals. In the 1978/79 European Cup, "Austria" reached the semifinals, and Schachner scored 5 goals. The following season, the team achieved a "golden double," winning both the league and the Austrian Cup, with Schachner scoring 34 goals in 36 league matches. In the 1980/81 season, he won his third championship title but only scored 13 goals in 29 games. In 1981, he moved to the Italian club "Cesena," which had just been promoted to Serie A. Schachner performed well in "Cesena" and regularly scored goals, but in 1983, the team was relegated to Serie B, after which the Austrian moved to "Torino." In Turin, he played alongside the Italian national team forwards – first with Franco Selvaggi, then with Aldo Serena. In the 1984/85 season, "Torino" finished second in Serie A, which allowed them to compete in the UEFA Cup the following season (reaching the second round). In 1986, Schachner moved to "Avellino," which was playing in Serie C1 at the time. In 1988, he returned to Austria and joined the "Sturm" club in Graz. He later played for several other teams in the top and first leagues of Austria. He retired as a player in 1998 at the age of 41.

International Career

Schachner made his debut for the Austrian national team on December 5, 1976, in a World Cup qualifying match against Malta. Ten days later, in his next international game, he scored his first goal. He participated in the 1978 World Cup, playing in three matches and scoring one goal. In the 1982 World Cup, he played in all five matches for the Austrian national team, scoring two goals. He played his last game for the national team on August 17, 1994, six years after his previous international match.

Coaching Career

Schachner started his coaching career at the club "Zeltweg," which he led to the Regional League. He then coached "Kärnten." In the 2000/01 season, he led them to first place in the First League, winning the Cup and Super Cup of Austria. In the following season, "Kärnten" finished 5th in the Bundesliga and were eliminated from the UEFA Cup in the first round by the Greek club PAOK. After that, he briefly coached Vienna's "Austria." In October 2002, he became the head coach of the "Grazer" club. In the 2002/03 season, he led the team to a record second-place finish in the Bundesliga, and in the following season, they achieved the "golden double," winning the league and the Austrian Cup. In the 2004/05 season, "Grazer" finished 2nd in the Bundesliga again and reached the Round of 16 in the UEFA Cup (losing to English club Middlesbrough with an aggregate score of 3-4). From January 2006 to March 2007, he was the head coach of the German club "Munich 1860," which was playing in the Second Bundesliga. In July 2007, he became the head coach of the newly created team "Austria Kärnten," and in December 2007, he was dismissed from the position but remained the club's sporting director. On August 9, 2008, he became the head coach of the "Admira Wacker" club.
