Biography of Vanik Zakaryan
Vanik Zakaryan is an Armenian mathematician, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, and a master of sports in chess. He began his academic career in 1959, when he entered the graduate school of the university specializing in the theory of functions. In 1963, he defended his candidate dissertation at the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the USSR under the guidance of academician M. M. Djrbashyan. From 1962 to 1977, he worked at Yerevan State University, the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences, and the Kh. Abovyan State Pedagogical Institute. In 1976, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic "Features and uniqueness of the solution of problems of meromorphic functions on sets".
Academic and Sporting Achievements
Since 1977, Vanik Zakaryan has been the head of the Mathematics Department at the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics. In 1979, he was awarded the title of professor. Alongside his scientific work, Zakaryan is also involved in teaching and has contributed significantly to the development of the new specialty of "Applied Mathematics". In 1990, he became a corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, and in 1996, he became a full member and academician. He is the author of over 100 scientific and methodological works and has supervised the defense of many candidate dissertations. He has also participated in numerous international mathematical conferences and serves as the editor of two journals of the National Academy of Sciences.
In addition to his achievements in mathematics, Vanik Zakaryan is also a master of sports in chess and has been a multiple champion of the city, republic, and Armenia. He has served as the president of the Armenian Chess Federation for 10 years, during which he organized the 32nd World Chess Olympiad (1996) and the 5th World Team Chess Championship (2001). Since 1990, he has been the deputy chairman of the Chess Federation of Armenia, and since 1996, he has been the deputy chairman of the International Chess Federation (FIDE). He has been re-elected to this position in 1998 and 2002. FIDE awarded him the N1 diploma of an international organizer for organizing the Chess Olympiad in 1996. His name is inscribed in the golden book of FIDE, and he has been awarded the chess "Oscar". In recognition of his significant contributions to the development of physical culture and sports, he was awarded the "Movses Khorenatsi" medal in 1999 and the honorary title of "Merited Worker of Physical Culture and Sports of Armenia" in 2003. In 2003, he was also awarded the "Anany Shirakatsi" medal for his immense contributions to the field of science and education.
