Childhood and Early Life
Vanja Drkusic was born on October 30, 1999, in Novo Mesto, Slovenia. His father, a former goalkeeper, played a pivotal role in fostering his interest in football. Drkusic began training at the age of five, and after watching Slovenia's memorable matches against Russia in the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, he aspired to become a professional footballer.
Club Career
Drkusic joined Krško in 2013 and moved to Heerenveen in the Netherlands in 2015. Despite impressive performances in the youth teams, he failed to break into the first team. He later joined Rende Calcio 1968 in Italy in 2019 but faced challenges and considered retiring. However, his father's support encouraged him to return to Slovenia and join Bravo.
Drkusic made his debut for Bravo in February 2020 and scored his first goal in July 2020. His solid performances attracted attention from European clubs, and he joined Russian club Sochi on loan in January 2022. He became a regular starter, captained the team, and made his professional debut against Rostov.
In August 2024, Drkusic transferred to Zenit Saint Petersburg on a five-year contract worth €1.3 million per year. His market value is estimated at €3.5 million according to Transfermarkt.
International Career
Drkusic represents Slovenia at the international level. He made his senior debut in March 2023 in a UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier against San Marino. He participated in the 2024 European Championship, playing in three group-stage matches and the round of 16, where Slovenia lost to Portugal on penalties.
