Early Life and Education
José Jorge Letria, the renowned Portuguese lawyer, writer, poet, translator, and politician, was born into a prosperous family in the northern Portuguese city of Braga. He is the son of Francisco José da Graça Mora and Maria Teresa Amado da Cunha Seixas Navarro de Castro.
Political Career
Letria's political career spanned several decades. He served as a member of the European Parliament as part of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and Popular Party (CDS-PP), belonging to the European People's Party (EPP) group. During his time in the European Parliament, he notably called on French Culture Minister Jean-Jacques Aillagon to repatriate artifacts taken from Portugal during the Napoleonic occupation.
Literary Achievements
Throughout his life, Letria published over 60 books, encompassing poetry, prose, essays, and literary translations. His literary contributions earned him prestigious awards, including the Fernando Pessoa Prize in 1995 and the "Golden Wreath" in 2004.
Personal Life
Letria married three times: to Maria Fernanda de Carvalho de Sá Dantas in 1964, Clara Crabb da Rocha (daughter of Miguel Torga) in 1985, and Maria do Rosário Bandeira de Lima de Sousa Machado in 1987.
