In 1954, Kuk was arrested and taken to Moscow by the KGB. After six years of imprisonment without trial, he was unexpectedly released. Following his release, Kuk became involved in preserving the memory of Ukrainian nationalists through the society "Holodny Yar." He rejects the radicalism of certain contemporary Ukrainian nationalist groups, such as the Ukrainian National Self-Defense Organization (UNSO), and believes they lack strong leadership and character. Kuk is also critical of Poland's historical claims on Ukrainian territory and emphasizes the importance of cooperation with Russia for the benefit of Ukraine.

Vasyl Kuk remains the sole surviving commander of the UPA, a symbol of the Ukrainian nationalist movement.
