Life and Career of Vakhtang Abashidze

Vakhtang Abashidze (1854-1926) was a renowned Georgian actor, director, and playwright who significantly contributed to the development of realistic theatre in Georgia.

Early Years

Born in the town of Dusheti on November 22, 1854, Abashidze began his involvement in theatre through amateur performances in 1874. In 1879, he joined the Tiflis Georgian Drama Troupe, where he established himself as a talented character and comedic actor.

Theatrical Achievements

Abashidze excelled in portraying memorable roles in vodevilles. His famous performances included Karapeti and Sarki Bogdanych in G. Eristavi's "The Miser" and "The Lawsuit," Geurk in Antonov's "Solar Eclipse in Georgia," Avet among Grigol Tsagareli's "Now Is Different," Zimzimov in S. Sundeukian's "Pepo," and many others.

Versatile Artist

In addition to his acting abilities, Abashidze authored several plays. He also directed productions and founded the influential theatre journal "Teatri" in 1885, which became the first such publication in Georgia.

Legacy

Vakhtang Abashidze's exceptional contributions to Georgian theatre earned him the title of People's Artist of the Republic in 1922. He passed away in Tiflis on October 9, 1926. As a testament to his legacy, the Tbilisi Georgian Music Comedy Theatre was named after him.
