Early Life and Education
Vladimir Vasiliyevich Shcherbitsky was born on 17 February 1918, in Verkhnedneprovsk, Ukraine. He graduated from the Dnipropetrovsk Institute of Railway Transport Engineers in 1949 and later earned a degree from the Higher Party School under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (1959).
Military Service and Komsomol Career
Shcherbitsky served in the Red Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945. Following the war, he became a prominent figure in the Komsomol, the Communist youth organization. He held various leadership positions, including First Secretary of the October District Committee of the Komsomol (1948-1950), First Secretary of the Dnipropetrovsk City Committee of the Komsomol (1951-1952), Secretary of the Central Committee of the Komsomol (1952-1954), Second Secretary of the Central Committee of the Komsomol (1954-1955), and First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Komsomol (1955-1960).
Political Career in Ukraine
Shcherbitsky's political career in Ukraine began in 1956, when he became a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine. He held various top positions in the party, including First Secretary of the Kyiv City Committee (1960-1962), First Secretary of the Kyiv Regional Committee (1962-1963, 1964-1966), and First Secretary of the Kyiv Industrial Regional Committee (1963-1964). From 1966 to 1971, he served as Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine and was a member of its Politburo.
Diplomatic Career
In 1971, Shcherbitsky was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the USSR to Romania. He held this position until 1982. During his diplomatic career, he was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and attended the XXIV, XXV, and XXVI congresses of the party.
Later Life and Death
Shcherbitsky retired in 1982 and died on 16 February 1990, in Moscow.Awards and Honors
