Biography of Vasily Macievich
Early Life and Military CareerVasily Antonovich Macievich was born on April 13, 1913, in the village of Peschanyy Brod, now part of the Dobrovelichkovsky District of the Kirovograd region, in a working-class family. He completed two courses at the Leningrad Maritime Technical School. In 1933, Macievich joined the Red Army and graduated from the Orenburg Military Aviation School for Pilots in 1936. A year later, he completed a command staff training course.
Macievich participated in several military campaigns, including the Soviet invasion of Western Ukraine and Western Belarus in 1939, and the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-1940. He served in the active army from June 1941. In the autumn of 1941, as a Senior Lieutenant, Macievich took part in intercepting German planes during night raids on Leningrad.
Achievements and Awards
By June 1942, Captain V.A. Macievich became the commander of the 26th Fighter Aviation Regiment (7th Fighter Aviation Corps, Air Defense Forces of the country). He flew a total of 196 combat missions, personally shot down 16 enemy planes, and destroyed 6 more as part of a group. On February 14, 1943, Macievich was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his courage and military valor in battles against the enemy. He made approximately 250 successful combat flights, engaged in 64 aerial battles, and shot down a total of 24 enemy aircraft.
After the war, Macievich continued to serve in the Air Force. In 1956, he graduated from the General Staff Academy. From 1964, Colonel V.A. Macievich was in reserve and lived and worked in Leningrad. He was awarded the Orders of Lenin, the Red Banner (twice), Alexander Nevsky, the Patriotic War 1st Class, the Red Star (twice), and several medals. Macievich passed away on September 10, 1981.
