Early Life and Career
Vasily Petrovich Tsyushko was born on February 1, 1963, in the Ukrainian SSR to a family of Moldovan collective farmers. After graduating from secondary school in 1978, he enrolled in the Izmail Technical Institute of Mechanization and Electrification of Agriculture. In 1982, he completed his studies and entered the Faculty of Economics at the Odessa Agricultural Institute.
Political Career
1994-2006: Member of ParliamentTsyushko's political career began in 1994 when he was elected to the Ukrainian Parliament (Verkhovna Rada) on the Peasant Party of Ukraine ticket. Re-elected in 1998 and 2002, he became an active member of the committees on finance and banking.
In 2001, Tsyushko co-founded the Party for the Defense of Rural Interests, which later merged with the Socialist Party of Ukraine (SPU). Elected on the SPU list in 2002, he rose to become the party's political secretary in 2006.
2005-2007: Governor of Odesa Oblast
From February 2005 to May 2006, Tsyushko served as Governor of Odesa Oblast. He left the post to return to the Rada after the 2006 parliamentary elections.
2006-2007: Minister of Internal Affairs
On December 1, 2006, Tsyushko was appointed Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine following the dismissal of Yuriy Lutsenko. His tenure was marked by a conflict with President Viktor Yushchenko over the government's decision to finance early parliamentary elections.
Health Issues and Resignation
In May 2007, Tsyushko was hospitalized with a heart attack. He was eventually airlifted to a German clinic for treatment. Upon his return, he accused political opponents of poisoning him, although this was never proven.
On September 30, 2007, Tsyushko resigned as Minister of Internal Affairs, citing health reasons. However, due to his legal status as a hospital patient, he formally remained in his position until the end of his sick leave.
Post-Political Career
After his resignation, Tsyushko retired from politics. He focused on his health and spent time with his family. He died on January 3, 2023, at the age of 59.
Personal Life
Tsyushko was married and had two children. He was known for his love of literature.
