Doris Bures: Austrian Politician and Former Acting President

Doris Bures is an Austrian politician from the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ). She has served as President of the National Council (Parliament) since September 2014.

Early Political Career

Bures' political journey began in 1980 with her involvement in the Federal Secretariat of the Socialist Youth. In 1987, she joined the Vienna-Liesing district council. She became a prominent figure in the SPÖ, serving as its secretary from 1988.

Election to Parliament

In 1990, Bures was elected to the Austrian Parliament. She rose through the ranks, becoming the SPÖ's executive director from 2000 to 2007 and again briefly before the federal elections in 2008.

Ministerial Roles

On January 11, 2007, Bures entered the government as a Minister without Portfolio in the Alfred Gusenbauer cabinet. She later held the portfolio of Minister for Women, Media, and Public Service from March 1, 2007. In 2008, Bures became Minister of Transport, Innovation, and Technology in Werner Faymann's government.

Presidency of the National Council

Since September 2014, Bures has presided over the National Council. She is the first female politician to hold this position.

Acting Presidency

From July 2016 to January 2017, Bures served as one of the three acting presidents of Austria following the resignation of the incumbent.

Personal Life

Before her political career, Bures worked as an assistant in a private dental clinic. She attended a business school in Vienna.
