Early Life and Education
Yuri Gavrilovich Erohin was born on December 18, 1934, in Kharkiv, Ukrainian SSR. In 1952, he graduated from high school and enrolled in the Marshal L. A. Govorov Artillery Radio Technical Academy of the Air Defense Forces in Kharkiv.
Military Career
In 1957, Erohin received his lieutenant's commission and was appointed as a senior engineer-tester for the "Dunay-2" long-range radar detection system, part of the experimental anti-missile defense system "A." He conducted field trials in Kazakhstan at the Balhash Lake test site.
From 1961 to 1974, Erohin served at the test site, holding positions as senior research scientist, deputy head of the radio technical department, deputy head of the 1st directorate, and, from 1971, head of the scientific research department of the State Testing Ground of the Air Defense Forces of the USSR.
Scientific Contributions
Erohin made significant contributions to the development of testing methodologies for complex automated systems and their components. In 1965, he defended his Ph.D. dissertation on long-range target detection systems for air defense.
Based on his research on experimental anti-missile defense systems and their testing methodologies, Erohin defended his doctoral dissertation in 1971. In 1974, he was awarded the academic title of professor by the Presidium of the Higher Attestation Commission.
Leadership and Recognition
In 1978, Erohin was appointed as the head of the 45th Central Research Institute (45 TsNIIM) of the USSR Ministry of Defense. During his tenure, the institute received the Order of Honor for its contributions to the development of specialized military equipment.
Erohin was recognized for his outstanding leadership and guidance. He mentored numerous young scientists, helping them complete their doctoral studies. He also participated actively in professional societies and editorial boards.
Legacy and Honors
For his significant contributions to the development, testing, and deployment of advanced weapons and military equipment, Erohin received the State Prize of the USSR and the honorary title of Honored Scientist and Engineer of the RSFSR. He was decorated with various medals and orders.
After being diagnosed with a terminal illness resulting from radiation exposure during military testing, Erohin continued to lead the 45 TsNIIM until his passing. He died on January 22, 1990, in Moscow and was buried in the Troyekurovskoye Cemetery.
