Early Life and Education
Karel Čapek was born on December 31, 1877, near Mělník, Czech Republic. He attended gymnasium in Prague and later studied law at Charles University.
Literary Career
Čapek was a renowned Czech writer, playwright, and journalist. In 1907, he became the editor of the magazine "Lumír," followed by "Samostatnost." From 1918, he edited the newspaper "Národní listy."
Political Involvement
Čapek's political journey began in 1911 as a member of the State-Progressive Party. In 1918, he co-founded the National Democratic Party and was elected to parliament. He became a senator in 1925. Čapek was an outspoken opponent of President Tomáš Masaryk's policies.
Personal Life
Karel Čapek married writer and journalist Zdeňka Hasková in 1928. Tragically, he died on May 14, 1931, while swimming near the island of Lopud, Yugoslavia, from a massive heart attack.
