Early Career and Military Service
Marie Victor Latour-Maubourg was born into a noble family in 1768. His military career began in 1782 when he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Boïol Infantry Regiment. He later served in the Orléans Cavalry Regiment and the Dauphin Regiment, where he rose to the rank of captain in 1785.
In 1789, Latour-Maubourg was appointed sub-lieutenant in the Royal Guard, equivalent to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He subsequently became a lieutenant colonel in the 3rd Horse Hussar Regiment and served as an aide-de-camp to General Lafayette.
In 1792, Latour-Maubourg was promoted to colonel and commanded Lafayette's vanguard. However, he was forced to flee France during the French Revolution and was captured by the Austrians. After being released from captivity, he lived in exile in Holland and northern France.
Napoleon's Campaigns
In 1800, Latour-Maubourg returned to France and was sent to Egypt on a mission to General Jean-Baptiste Kléber. He participated in the Battle of Abukir and the Battle of Cairo. In 1801, he was severely wounded in the Siege of Alexandria and took a long time to recover.
In 1805, Latour-Maubourg was promoted to brigadier general after distinguishing himself at the Battle of Austerlitz. In 1806, he took command of the legendary "Hellish Brigade" (Brigade Infernale) under Marshal Jean Lannes.
Peninsular War
In 1808, Latour-Maubourg led his brigade in the Peninsular War in Spain and Portugal. He fought in several major battles, including Talavera, Ocaña, and Albuera. In 1811, he took command of the 5th Corps of the Army of Spain and later led a cavalry division in Andalusia under Marshal Jean-de-Dieu Soult.
Later Commands
In 1812, Latour-Maubourg returned to France and commanded the 2nd Cavalry Division. He was subsequently appointed commander of the 4th Cavalry Corps. In 1814, he was rewarded with the title of count and marquis.
Legacy
Victor Latour-Maubourg was a highly respected and successful cavalry officer who fought in many of Napoleon's most famous campaigns. He was known for his bravery, leadership, and strategic brilliance. He died in 1830, leaving behind a legacy of valor and military prowess.
