Victor Teryelya: A Multifaceted Master of the Russian Stage and Screen
Early Life and Education
Victor Teryelya was born on July 8, 1963, in the village of Novoselytsia, Ukrainian SSR. Of Rusyn ethnicity, Teryelya credits his childhood influences for fostering his passion for the arts. His family members, including his mother, uncle, and teachers, instilled in him a love for literature and the performing arts.
After studying puppetry, Teryelya faced initial rejection from Moscow theater schools due to his Rusyn accent. In 1985, he caught the attention of acclaimed actor Oleg Tabakov, who advised him to enroll at the Kyiv Theater Institute and later transfer to Tabakov's own class.
Teryelya ultimately pursued his studies under renowned director Lev Dodin at the Leningrad State Institute of Theater, Music and Cinematography (LGITMiK). He graduated at the age of 26 and later earned a directing degree from GITIS under Anatoly Vasiliev.
Theater Career
Teryelya began his acting career at the Maly Drama Theatre (Theater of Europe) in Leningrad, where he played notable roles in "Hamlet" and "Claustrophobia." Upon moving to Moscow to attend GITIS, he joined the School of Dramatic Art, founded by Vasiliev.
As a director, Teryelya has staged several productions, including "The Exile" by Samuel Beckett, "The Paradox of the Actor" by Denis Diderot, and "The Brothers Karamazov" by Fyodor Dostoevsky. At the Electrotheatre Stanislavsky, he has performed in Boris Yukhananov's "The Steadfast Principle," drawing praise for his portrayal of the Moorish ruler.
Film and Television
Teryelya made his film debut in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He has played a diverse range of characters, including a detective in "The Black Cat" and a student in "Dyuba-Dyuba." In 1993, he portrayed Georgy Gapon in the historical drama "The Schism."
Teryelya's notable film and television roles include King Frederick II the Great in "By Pen and Sword," Tsarist courtier Pyotr Shuvalov in "Catherine the Great," and Joseph Stalin in "Chkalov." He is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Lyoksa Sapporo in the popular telenovela "Carmelita: Gypsy Passion."
Due to his appearance and distinctive accent, Teryelya has often been cast as Muslim characters, such as Azamat in "Merry Boys ;)," Mehmet in "The Taste of Pomegranate," and Mehmed Pasha in "Catherine the Imposter." Among his beloved Russian roles are philosophy professor Herman Shcherbinsky in "Strawberry Paradise" and former detective Sergei Petrovsky in "Rostov."
Personal Life
Victor Teryelya is married to a scientist named Lyudmila, with whom he has a daughter, Anastasia. He dedicated his play "A Midsummer Night's Dream" to his wife.
