Early Life and Career
Gintaras Kvitkauskas was born in Taurage, Lithuania, and spent his early years developing his football skills at the local football school. By 1982, he had joined the reserve team of FK Zalgiris, one of Lithuania's top clubs.
Professional Debut and European Success
In 1985, Kvitkauskas briefly played for FC Sport in the Soviet Second League before returning to Zalgiris in 1986. Though he saw limited playing time, he made his mark on the European stage, featuring in one match during the 1988/89 UEFA Cup.
Move to Germany and Career Highlights
In 1990, Kvitkauskas sought new challenges abroad and joined German club TSV Ronsdorf. With Ronsdorf, he helped the team gain promotion from the Oberliga to the 2. Bundesliga, where they played for two seasons.
Kvitkauskas returned to TSV Ronsdorf in 1999, where his former Zalgiris teammate, Sigitas Jakubauskas, was now manager. He spent two more seasons with Ronsdorf before retiring from playing.
Coaching Career and Tragic Demise
After retiring as a player, Kvitkauskas worked as a coach for German amateur club TS Struck. In October 2013, he became the club's head coach.
Tragically, Kvitkauskas and his brother lost their lives in a fishing accident on the Nemunas River on July 4, 2014.
