Early Life and Education

Victor Mikhailovich Anichkov was born on February 10 (22), 1830, into a wealthy Russian noble family in the Orenburg Governorate. After graduating from the Orenburg Neplyuevsky Cadet Corps, he continued his education at the General Staff Academy, where he later became a professor of military administration (1857-1873).

Military Career

Anichkov also briefly served as vice-director of the former Commissariat Department before being promoted to Major General in 1866. In this rank, he became a member of the Military Science Committee of the General Staff.

Literary Achievements

As a military writer, Anichkov gained recognition at a young age. He published a translation of "The Warrior of Denmark in 1849 and 50" in 1851 and an original article, "Analysis of the Battle of Wagram," in 1852. His two-volume "Military-Historical Essays on the Crimean Expedition" was published in 1856.

Contributions to Military Science

After being sent abroad, Anichkov studied military administration and economics in foreign countries. Upon his return, he developed scientific principles for these subjects and published his lectures as "Military Economy: A Comparative Study of the Laws of Russia, Austria, France, Prussia, Sardinia, Belgium, and Bavaria" (1860).

Editorial Roles and Legacy

Anichkov was a contributor to the Military Encyclopedia Lexicon and edited the military section of the "Encyclopedia Dictionary" published by the Russian Society of Scholars and Writers. He also served as the first editor of the journal "Military Collection" founded in 1858. He authored "Handbook for Lower Ranks Responsible for Food Provisions in Army Divisions" (1871).

Later Years and Legacy

Victor Mikhailovich Anichkov passed away on February 18 (March 2), 1877. After his death, his son, Mikhail Anichkov, published "War and Labor" in his father's memory.
