Early Life and Military Education
Victor Dankl von Krasnik was born into a family of Austrian army officers. He attended the military academies of Gorizia, Trieste, and Wiener Neustadt before graduating from the prestigious Theresian Military Academy in 1874.
Military Career
After graduating, Dankl served in various cavalry and infantry units, including the 3rd Dragoon Regiment and the 11th Uhlan Regiment. In 1896, he became Chief of Staff of the XIII Army Corps in Agram (now Zagreb).
Chief of Operations and Combat Command
In 1899, Dankl became Chief of Operations in the General Staff. In 1903, he commanded the 66th Infantry Brigade, followed by the 16th Infantry Brigade in 1905. In 1907, he took command of the 36th Infantry Division. In 1912, he became Commander of the XIV Army Corps in Innsbruck and Chief of Defense for Tyrol and Vorarlberg.
World War I
At the outbreak of World War I, Dankl commanded the 1st Army, which fought in the Battle of Galicia. He led his troops to victory at Krasnik, earning him the title Count von Krasnik. However, he was later forced to retreat due to overwhelming Russian forces.
11th Army Command
In 1916, Dankl was appointed Commander of the 11th Army in South Tyrol. He led an offensive in Trentino but was met with stiff Italian resistance. After facing criticism for the slow pace of the offensive, he resigned from his post.
Post-War Activities
After the war, Dankl became Chancellor of the Maria Theresa Military Order. He was a vocal opponent of the Anschluss between Austria and Germany in the 1930s. He died in 1941 and was buried in Innsbruck without military honors from the Nazi regime.
