Viktor Kaplan: Pioneer of Hydropower

Viktor Kaplan was an Austrian engineer and inventor renowned for his groundbreaking work on hydroelectric turbines.

Early Life and Education

Kaplan was born in Mürzzuschlag, Austria, in 1876, the son of a railway worker. He attended high school in Vienna and graduated in 1895. He then enrolled at the Vienna University of Technology, where he studied civil engineering and specialized in diesel engines.

Military Service and Academic Career

After completing his military service in Pula (1900-1901), Kaplan returned to Vienna to pursue scientific research on engine design. In 1903, he joined the Brno University of Technology as a researcher in the civil engineering department.

Development of the Kaplan Turbine

Kaplan spent the next three decades in Brno and made significant contributions to the field of hydraulic engineering. In 1912, he embarked on a project to develop a new type of water turbine with increased efficiency and speed. In 1920, he patented his invention, the Kaplan turbine, which utilized adjustable blades to control the flow of water.

Commercialization and Success

In 1918, Kaplan became the head of Brno's Institute of Hydraulic Turbines. His turbine designs gained international recognition, and in 1926, the first Kaplan turbine was installed by Storek for a textile mill in Lower Austria. The success of the Kaplan turbine led to its widespread adoption worldwide.

Later Years and Legacy

Kaplan received honorary doctorates in 1926 and 1934. He died in Unterach am Attersee, Austria, in 1934, after suffering a stroke. His legacy lives on through the countless hydropower plants that utilize his innovative turbine technology.

Commemoration

Kaplan's contributions have been honored through various tributes, including his portrait on the 1000 Austrian schilling banknote (1961) and postage stamps in Austria (1936 and 1976).
