Childhood and Education
Growing up in the aftermath of World War II, Yakimov's imagination was captured by films and storytelling. Encouraged by his grandfather's prophetic words, he pursued a dual passion for the arts and the military. After graduating high school, he served in the Soviet Army as a radio operator in the Moscow Air Defense District.
Recognizing his aptitude for the arts, Yakimov enrolled in the Zaouchny Narodny University (Distance Education) and the Lviv Higher Military Political School's theatre department. While studying, he gained invaluable experience through the Lviv Russian Drama Theatre of the Soviet Army.
Military Career
After completing his military education in 1966, Yakimov held various leadership positions, including heading the Leningrad Institute of Theatre, Music, and Cinematography's department of theatre studies (1969-77). He served as a senior specialist in drama and theatre for the Main Political Directorate of the Armed Forces (1980-83) before his first appointment as Director of the Central Academic Theatre of the Soviet Army (1983-87).
Return to the Theatre
In 1995, Yakimov was summoned to address a crisis at the Theatre of the Russian Army. As the new Director, he implemented innovative financial strategies, secured government and private funding, and introduced new artistic leadership, resulting in a resurgence of the theatre's reputation and artistic output.
Under Yakimov's guidance, the theatre has maintained its commitment to performing for military audiences, including during the conflicts in Afghanistan and Chechnya. The company has also toured extensively, promoting Russian military culture worldwide.
Academic and Administrative Achievements
Throughout his career, Yakimov has been a prolific writer, contributing over 50 scholarly publications on theatre history, contemporary drama, and military culture. He is a professor, academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, and former Chairman of the State Examination Committee of the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts.
Yakimov is an active member of professional organizations, including the Creative Union of Culture Workers of Russia and the International Academy of Theatre. He serves on the editorial boards of several theatre and military journals.
