Early Life and Education

The composer was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1862. He pursued his musical studies at the Leipzig Conservatory.

Musical Career in Russia

After graduating from the Leipzig Conservatory, the composer relocated to Russia. In 1895, he composed the opera "Song of Triumphant Love" based on a story by Ivan Turgenev. While the opera was performed in various cities such as Kharkiv, Kazan, and Moscow, it failed to showcase significant depth or talent in its composition.

Expedition for Folk Song Collection

In 1906, the composer embarked on a journey to Siberia with the intention of collecting prison and convict songs. Upon returning to Russia, he presented several concerts in Saint Petersburg and other cities, featuring the harmonized prison and convict songs he had gathered. A portion of the collected material, including valuable and intriguing pieces, was subsequently published.
