Biography of Vilhelms Purvītis

Vilhelms Purvītis was a Latvian landscape artist and one of the founders of modern Latvian painting. He was born on April 3, 1872, in the small town of Kandava, in present-day Latvia. Purvītis studied at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, Russia, under the renowned painter Arkhip Kuindzhi. He completed his studies at the academy with a prestigious gold medal and then embarked on a journey across Europe.

From 1898 to 1901, Purvītis exhibited his paintings in Berlin, Munich, Paris, and Lyon, where they received acclaim from both the public and art critics. In 1901, he settled in Riga, the capital of Latvia. In 1902, Purvītis traveled to Norway, Iceland, and Spitsbergen, where he studied the effects of snow. His paintings showcased a style that was influenced by both Impressionism and Northern Modernism, with a particular talent for capturing spring and winter landscapes.

Throughout his career, Purvītis was actively involved in the artistic community. From 1895 to 1910, he was a member of the association "World of Art." He lived in Estonia from 1906 to 1909 and later resided in Norway from 1917 to 1919. In 1909, Purvītis became the director of the Riga City Art School, and in 1919, he became the rector of the newly established Academy of Arts in Riga. He led the landscape workshop at the academy until 1941. Additionally, from 1919 to 1940 and 1914 to 1944, he served as the director of the Riga State Art Museum.

In 1944, fearing arrest by Soviet forces, Purvītis emigrated to Germany. He passed away on January 14, 1945, in Bad Nauheim, where he was receiving medical treatment. In 1994, his remains were reburied in Riga, Latvia.
