Early Life and Education
Translated from "Šakiai". Completed Kaunas Teachers' Seminary (1954).Translator and Activist
Translated for "Komjaunimo tiesa" in Moscow (1955-1956).
Literary Career
Graduated from Maxim Gorky Literature Institute (1961). Member of Lithuanian Writers' Union (1968) and Lithuanian Translators' Union (2003).
Political Involvement
Joined Sąjūdis Initiative Group (1988). Elected Secretary of Sąjūdis Council (1989-1990).
Member of Parliament
Served as a member of the Supreme Council (1990-1992), which declared Lithuania's independence.
Later Career
Left parliament due to allegations of KGB cooperation. Chief Editor of "Litterae universitatis" (1993). Director of "Tvermė" (1996).
Literary Translations
Debuted with a Polish translation of "Winnie-the-Pooh" in 1958. Translated various works from English, Russian, and Polish, including Lithuanian prose.
Other Works
Co-author of the screenplay for the film "Virto ėriukai" (1976). Authored a memoir about his involvement in the events of 1988-1990.
