Biography of Virginia Cherrill
Virginia Cherrill was an American actress, best known for her role as the blind flower girl in Charlie Chaplin's film "City Lights." She was born on a farm near Carthage, Illinois, to James E. Cherrill and his wife Blanche Wilcox. Growing up, she moved to Hollywood, where she met Charlie Chaplin at a boxing match. Chaplin was impressed by her and cast her as the blind flower girl in his film "City Lights" (1931). However, their relationship during filming was not easy. Chaplin even fired Virginia after a few days of shooting and decided to replace her with Georgia Hale. But in the end, fearing the cost of reshooting, Chaplin brought her back. She later appeared in several other films, including "Charlie Chan's Greatest Case" in 1933, but she left her acting career in 1936.
Virginia was married four times. Her second husband was actor Cary Grant (1934 - 1935), and her third husband was George Child-Villiers, the 9th Earl of Jersey (1937 - 1946), with whom she gained the title of Countess. In 1948, she married Florián Martini, with whom she spent the rest of her life in Santa Barbara. She passed away on November 14, 1996, at the age of 88, due to a stroke.
Virginia Cherrill is the recipient of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
