Virius Lupus: A Roman Senator of the Late Third Century
Early Life and FamilyVirius Lupus was born into a senatorial family in the late 3rd century AD. His father, Virius Agricola, was the consul of 230 AD, while his grandfather, Lupus, was the consul of 232 AD.
Political Career
In 272 AD, Virius Lupus was appointed as governor of the province of Arabia Petraea. The following year, he became president of Syria. In 274 AD, he was elected to the priesthood of the Sun God.
Consulship and Prefect of Rome
In 275 AD, Virius Lupus likely served as consul suffectus (a junior consul). His political ascent culminated in 278 AD, when he became consul ordinarius (a senior consul) alongside Emperor Probus. From 278 to 280 AD, he held the prestigious post of Prefect of the City of Rome.
Later Life
After his term as Prefect, Virius Lupus's political career is less well-documented. However, his influence within the Roman Senate and the imperial administration undoubtedly continued until his death.
