In 1933, Vitalii was ordained to the priesthood. He served diligently as the hegumen (abbot) of the monastery in Drohobych from 1941 onward.

After World War II, the Soviet Union intensified its persecution of the Greek Catholic Church in Ukraine. On September 17, 1945, Vitalii was arrested by the NKVD and sentenced to eight years in a labor camp.
