Life and Career

Svetozar Marković was a prominent Serbian statesman, writer, philosopher, and economist. He was a strong advocate for social liberalism, greatly influenced by the ideas of John Stuart Mill.

Exile and Activism

In 1860, Marković was forced to flee Serbia due to his affiliation with the radical party. In 1865, he established the Serbian-French newspaper "Slobôda - La Liberté." The following year, he organized and led the liberal Serbian party known as "omladina" in Pest. This party aimed to achieve national unity and political freedom in Serbia.

Return and Political Involvement

After his suspicions in the assassination of Prince Michael in 1869 were dismissed, Marković returned to Serbia in 1872. He became a member of the National Assembly and served as Minister of Finance from 1876 to 1880.

Literary Contributions

In addition to his political activities, Marković was also a prolific writer. He published numerous articles in newspapers, as well as translated works by Wilhelm Roscher and John Mill. His own publications included "Les Serbes et la mission de la Serbie dans l'Europe d'Orient" and "The Emancipation of the Serbian Nation."
