Early Life and Education
Yuriy Viktorovich Vitrenko was born in Ukraine in 1949. He graduated from the Zaporizhzhya Mechanical Engineering Institute with a degree in radio engineering. From 1987 to 1990, he studied at the Academy of Social Sciences under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). In 1990, he earned a Candidate of Economic Sciences degree with a dissertation on the establishment and operation of a special economic zone in Ukraine.
Early Career and Military Service
Vitrenko's career began as a toolmaker at the "Radiopribor" plant in Zaporizhzhia in 1967. He then served in the Pacific Fleet from 1967 to 1968. Upon his discharge, he returned to "Radiopribor" and held various positions, including production manager and deputy director. From 1980 to 1982, he was assigned to Afghanistan.
Political Career
In 1985, Vitrenko entered politics as the Secretary for Industry on the Zaporizhzhia City Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine. He later became an inspector at the CPSU Central Committee. In 1988, he served as Secretary for Industry on the Zakarpattia Oblast Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine.
From 1990 to 1997, Vitrenko was the General Director of the "Radiopribor" plant. He then held several government positions, including Deputy Minister of Machine Building and Conversion of Ukraine in 1996-1997.
Governor of Zaporizhzhia Oblast
On April 9, 1998, Vitrenko was appointed Governor of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast. He held this position until January 14, 1999, when he became First Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine in the Pustovoitenko Government. He served in this capacity until July 31, 1999.
Post-Governmental Career
After his time in government, Vitrenko was an advisor to President Leonid Kuchma from November to December 1999. He then returned as Governor of Zaporizhzhia Oblast from December 2, 1999, to June 14, 2000.
From 2001 to 2003, Vitrenko served as Chairman of the State Reserve Committee of Ukraine. In 2011, he became Deputy General Director of the state concern "Ukroboronprom."
