Early Life and Education
Vladimir Mečiar was born in 1942 in Zvolen. He went on to study law at the Jan Amos Komensky University in Prague, graduating in 1974.
Military and Political Career
Following his graduation, Mečiar completed military service. In 1962, he joined the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. His political aspirations led him to Moscow, where he attended the Higher School of the Central Committee of the CPSU.
The Presidential Surprise
In 2004, Mečiar made headlines in Slovakia when he emerged as the winner of the first round of the presidential election. Despite initial predictions that he would not be a frontrunner, he secured over 32% of the votes. This upset shocked many, as opinion polls had favored Foreign Minister Eduard Kukan.
Controversial Figure
Mečiar's victory highlighted the challenges facing Slovakia. Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda warned that if the former communist leader became president, Slovakia's entry into NATO and the European Union could be jeopardized.
Personal Life
Mečiar is married to Margita, and they have three children: two sons and a daughter.
