Pavel Vasilyevich Kucher
Early Life and EducationPavel Vasilyevich Kucher was born on June 15, 1921, in the village of Nepryakhino in the Bryansk Governorate, USSR. He completed his secondary education in 1936 and worked as a farmer and in a shoemaker's shop in his hometown.
Military Career
Kucher was drafted into the Red Army in October 1940. Upon the outbreak of World War II, he was stationed at a border outpost on the Prut River, where he experienced the initial onslaught of the German invasion.
During the war, Kucher fought on several fronts, including the Western, Central, Bryansk, and 1st Belorussian Fronts. He commanded a machine gun crew in the 12th Guards Cavalry Regiment of the 3rd Guards Cavalry Division.
Heroism and Awards
Kucher's most notable act of heroism occurred on February 1, 1945, in the vicinity of Flederborn, Eastern Pomerania. Despite being heavily outnumbered, his machine gun crew prevented the enemy from breaking through, killing up to 120 German soldiers. For this feat, Kucher was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on March 24, 1945.
Post-War Life
After the war, Kucher continued his military service until his demobilization in 1946. He worked in Moscow and then returned to his hometown, where he resided for the rest of his life.
Kucher remained active in public affairs, serving as a deputy in various local and regional councils. He was a member of the Bryansk City Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and a delegate to the XXIII Congress of the CPSU in 1966.
Legacy
Pavel Vasilyevich Kucher passed away and was buried in Belaya Berezha, Russia. His hometown named a secondary school after him to commemorate his heroism.
