Early Life and Photography Journey

Childhood and Family

Vladimir Repik was born in Astrakhan, Russia, to a military family. In 1954, he moved with his family to Kyiv, Ukraine.

Passion for Photography

His fascination with photography began in 1954 when his uncle, an amateur photographer, gifted him with a "Zorky-S" camera. After returning from military service, he purchased a "Zenit" camera and pursued photography more seriously.

Education and Career Beginnings

Repik graduated from the Republican Correspondence Technical College, specializing in photography. He worked in central photo salons in Kyiv and gained recognition as a skilled portrait photographer.

Career as Photojournalist

TAS-RAU-UKRINFORM

From 1978 onwards, Repik worked at the news agency TAS-RAU-UKRINFORM. As a photojournalist, he traveled extensively throughout the Soviet Union, including expeditions to the North Pole.

Deputy of Kyiv Council

Repik served as a deputy of the Kyiv Council.

Shocking Images of a Nuclear Calamity

Following the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, Repik's photographs capturing the damage to Reactor No. 4 were among the first to be published in Soviet and international media. Captured from a low-flying helicopter, the images provided a haunting glimpse of the devastation.

Personal Risk and Recovery

Repik worked alongside photojournalist Valery Zufarov during the helicopter shoot. Both photojournalists experienced radiation exposure and required treatment at a military hospital in Moscow.

Photographer to Ukrainian Leaders

Official Portraits and Gallery

Repik became the personal photographer of Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma and all Prime Ministers except Yulia Tymoshenko. His official portraits are displayed in the Prime Ministerial Gallery at the Government Building.

Legacy and Honors

20th Anniversary Exhibition

In 2011, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Ukraine's independence, Repik's solo exhibition "Independent Ukraine - History in Faces" was showcased in 79 countries.

Vladimir Repik Photo Contest

After his passing in 2012, UKRINFORM established an annual photography contest in his name.

Awards and Recognition

Repik received numerous awards, including:

- Order of the Badge of Honor for his photojournalism on the Chernobyl disaster

- Union of Journalists of the USSR Prize "Reliable Leader - Reliable Future"

- 2004 (with Valery Solovyov)

- 2010: Author's exhibition at the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine
- 2011: "Chernobyl Tragedy: Eyewitness Testimony"
