Lieutenant Vladimir Fyodorovich Vladimirov: Hero of the Soviet Union

Early Life and Career

Born on July 9, 1914, in the village of Golovino near Moscow, Vladimirov came from a working-class family. He received a basic education and worked at a machine-building plant in Moscow. In 1938, he became a lathe operator at the mechanical workshops of the Northern River Port.

Military Service

Vladimirov enlisted in the Red Army in October 1941 and participated in the defense of Moscow. In 1942, he graduated from courses for junior lieutenants and was assigned as a platoon commander in the 118th Guards Rifle Regiment. After being severely wounded in battles near Smolensk, he returned to his unit after three months and was appointed as a company commander.

Heroism and Death

In autumn 1943, Vladimirov's reconnaissance company played a crucial role in the 37th Guards Rifle Division's offensive. They were the first to cross the Desna and Sozh rivers and on September 12, 1943, they destroyed the headquarters of a Nazi infantry regiment. Vladimirov particularly distinguished himself in the forcing of the Dnieper River. On October 21, 1943, his company crossed the river and drove the enemy out of their trenches. They repelled eight counterattacks and liberated the villages of Isakovichi and Straduvka. Vladimirov was killed in action in December 1943 during a battle near the village of Karpovka in Belarus.

Honors and Legacy

For his bravery and heroism, Lieutenant Vladimir Fyodorovich Vladimirov was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on January 15, 1944. He was also awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner, the Order of Alexander Nevsky, and various medals. A memorial plaque was placed on the building of the Northern River Port workshops in Moscow, and his name is commemorated on an obelisk outside the port's administration building.
