Early Life and Education

Aliyar Aliyev, a renowned Azerbaijani wrestler and National Hero of Azerbaijan, was born on December 14, 1957, in the village of Ghaziyan, Qubadli district. After graduating with honors from the Azerbaijan State Institute of Physical Culture in 1979, he worked as a physical education teacher at a secondary school in the village of Dondarli, Qubadli district until his military service.

Teaching and Return to Qubadli

Following his military service in 1982, Aliyev was invited to work at the Saransk State University. He returned to his hometown in 1983 and taught at a secondary school. In 1985, he was elected chairman of the district council of the Voluntary Society of Physical Culture and Sports.

Wrestling Achievements

Aliyev was a multiple victor in republican, union, and world competitions in classical wrestling. He trained several students who became champions of the republic, the former USSR, and members of the Olympic team. He was the first coach of Heydar Mammadaliyev, an Azerbaijani wrestler from Russia who won a silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games and a world championship in 2002.

Role in the Karabakh Conflict

In the late 1980s, amidst the Armenian movement to annex Nagorno-Karabakh, Aliyev led the Popular Movement in the Beylagan district. When open hostilities erupted, he was one of the first to volunteer for the front.

Military Exploits

Aliyev's unit inflicted devastating blows on Armenian forces who were heavily shelling the Topagach hill in April 1990. On November 15, 1991, his unit achieved victory in a battle on the Yazi plain. The following month, his fighters dealt a significant blow to the enemy advancing towards the villages of Farajan and Koyaal.

Commander of Batallion

In April 1992, Aliyev was appointed commander of a battalion. He implemented operational measures to strengthen the defensive line along the border with Armenia's Kapan, Goriss, and Gadrut districts. When Armenian units attempted to capture strategic heights in Basharat, Aliyev's battalion engaged them in a fierce battle that lasted over four hours, resulting in Aliyev's victory.

Liberation of Lachin

Following the Armenian occupation of the Lachin district, Aliyev's battalion launched an operation to liberate it. After destroying 30 enemy fortifications, the battalion advanced towards Lachin.

Heroic Death

On October 3, 1992, in a battle on the Jurumubashi hill in the Lachin district, Aliyev inflicted heavy losses on the enemy before heroically falling in action.

Legacy

Aliyev was married and had two sons and one daughter. By presidential decree, he was posthumously awarded the honorary title of National Hero of Azerbaijan. He is buried in his hometown of Ghaziyan. A street in Baku and the battalion he created bear his name.
