Biography of Vladimir Yakunin

Vladimir Yakunin was born in Odessa in 1855. He completed his studies at the 3rd Odessa Gymnasium and later at the Elisavetinsk Cavalry School. His military service began on February 25, 1874, when he was assigned to a military academy and graduated in 1877, becoming a cornet.

Early Military Career

Yakunin's early military career coincided with the Turkish campaign of 1877-1878. He was awarded the Orders of St. Anna, 4th and 3rd Class, as well as the Order of St. Stanislaus, 3rd Class, for his distinguished service in battle.

Civil and Public Service

In 1882, Yakunin retired from the military and joined the reserves of the army's cavalry. After leaving the army, he returned to Odessa and became a secretary of the Odessa District Zemstvo Assembly in 1883. He later became the chairman of the Odessa District Zemstvo Administration and the leader of the local nobility in 1901. From 1883 to 1892, he served as an honorary justice of the peace for the Odessa District.

In 1889, Yakunin was elected as a senior member of the Novorossiysk Society of Horse Breeding and became its vice-president in 1895. He was also elected as a deputy of the Odessa District Nobility in 1892 and appointed as a justice of the peace for Odessa in 1894. In recognition of his service, he received the Order of St. Anna, 2nd Class in 1895 and the Order of St. Vladimir, 4th Class in 1899. In 1902, he was appointed as a State Councilor and in 1903, he received the court title of Chamberlain of His Imperial Majesty's Court.

Samara Governorship

Yakunin arrived in Samara on September 12, 1906, after being appointed as the governor of Samara on August 16 of the same year. During his time in Samara, Yakunin implemented strict measures, such as establishing a military court just four days after his arrival and imposing strict censorship on the press by declaring a state of heightened security in the Samara province.

Acknowledgements and Honors

Yakunin's successful tenure as governor was recognized and praised by the government, particularly by Prime Minister P.A. Stolypin. He received numerous prestigious acknowledgements, including gratitude from Emperor Nicholas II for his land management achievements on December 6, 1908. He was also honored by various committees and organizations for his charitable work, such as the Committee led by Empress Alexandra Feodorovna for providing land to military officers affected by the Russo-Japanese War. Yakunin was awarded with orders, decorations, and titles for his contributions to various causes, including the Red Cross and the Imperial Russian Society for the Rescue of Drowning People.

Later Life

On May 6, 1910, Yakunin became the court master of His Imperial Majesty's Court. Later that year, on August 23, he was transferred to Dnipropetrovsk as the acting governor.

After leaving Samara, Yakunin was honored by the City Duma, which named a street in the Meschansky district after him and established a scholarship in his name at a local trade school. His exact whereabouts and further life after 1917, when he resided in Odessa, remain unknown.
