Vladislav Bezborodov: A Russian Football Referee's Journey
Early BeginningsOn June 22, 2007, Vladislav Bezborodov made his professional refereeing debut in the Russian Premier League, the highest level of football in the country. The match between Krylya Sovetov and Kuban Krasnodar marked the culmination of a journey that began many years earlier.
Born on July 29, 1977, in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), Bezborodov grew up playing football. He spent his early career in youth teams before moving to America. After returning to Russia, he had stints with Dinamo Saint Petersburg, Ventspils (Latvia), and three clubs in Belarus. However, an injury at age 30 forced him to reassess his future.
Transition to Refereeing
With his playing days behind him, Bezborodov turned to refereeing. His father, Yuri Bezborodov, was also a referee, and Vladislav sought his guidance. In the 2003 Granatkin Memorial Tournament, Bezborodov met Nikolai Ivanov, head of referees at the Zenit sports society. Ivanov offered him the opportunity to officiate children's games.
Bezborodov quickly impressed with his composure and attention to detail. He was mentored by respected referee Anatoly Ivanov and former player Alexei Rumyantsev. Within a few years, he was officiating at the professional level.
Rise in the Ranks
Bezborodov's rapid rise in the refereeing ranks was met with some skepticism. However, he silenced his critics with his consistent performances and dedication to his craft. He became a FIFA referee in 2010, the same year he received the Best Referee of the Russian Premier League award.
