Early Life and Political Activism

Born into a peasant family, Vo Van Kiet joined the Indochinese Communist Party in 1939. He actively participated in the anti-colonial youth movement and played a significant role in the fight against French colonizers during the First Indochina War (1946-1954).

Rise Through Party Ranks

In 1960, Kiet became a candidate member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV). He was promoted to full membership in 1972 and served as a candidate member of the Politburo from 1976 to 1982. During the Vietnam War, Kiet held key positions in the Southern Bureau of the CPV in South Vietnam.

Post-Unification Leadership

After the victory of North Vietnam in the civil war in 1976, Kiet served as the First Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Municipal Party Committee. From 1982 to 1987, he held the positions of Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the State Planning Committee.

Acting Prime Minister and Premier

Kiet became the First Deputy Prime Minister in 1987 and served as Acting Prime Minister from March to June 1988. Although he received 36% of the votes in the 1988 National Assembly election for Prime Minister, he lost to Do Muoi. Finally, in 1991, Kiet was elected Chairman of the Council of Ministers, which was later renamed Premier of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in 1992. He served as Prime Minister until 1997.

Later Years

After his retirement from the premiership in 1997, Kiet continued to serve as a consultant to the Politburo until 2001. He remained a member of the Politburo from 1982 to 1997. In 2001, he retired from active political life.
