Early Life and Education

Vsevolod Holubovych was born into a priest's family. He initially pursued his education at a seminary before graduating as an engineer from the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in 1915.

Political Activism

In 1903, Holubovych joined the Revolutionary Ukrainian Party. Nine years later, he became a member of the Ukrainian Party of Socialists-Revolutionaries (UPSR). He initially worked as an engineer on the Southern Railway, and from 1916 to August 1917, he served as the head of the department of water, highway, and ground roads on the Romanian Front.

Contributions to Ukrainian Independence

In April 1917, on behalf of the Odesa community, Holubovych submitted a petition to the Provisional Government demanding territorial autonomy for Ukraine. As a member of the Odesa Ukrainian community, he played a vital role in the Central Rada as the Secretary of Transportation from July 1917 and Secretary of Trade and Industry from October 1917.

Leadership and Imprisonment

From January to April 1918, Holubovych served as the Chairman of the Council of National Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Ukrainian National Republic (UNR). He led the UNR delegation to Brest-Litovsk for peace negotiations with Germany. However, his involvement in the kidnapping of banker A. Dobry led to his arrest by the Germans in April 1918. He was imprisoned in the Lukyanivska prison until December 1918.

Later Career and Legacy

After his release, Holubovych edited UPSR publications in Kamianets-Podilskyi and Vinnytsia. In 1920, he was arrested by the Special Department of the 14th Army and sentenced to five years in prison. He was amnestied in December 1921 and worked in the capital construction department of the Ukrainian Council of National Economy until 1931.

Persecution and Death

In 1931, Holubovych was again arrested and imprisoned as part of the Ukrainian National Center case. He died in a prison in Yaroslavl on May 16, 1939. In 2005, the National Bank of Ukraine issued a commemorative coin in honor of the 120th anniversary of his birth. Despite his untimely demise, Vsevolod Holubovych's contributions to Ukrainian independence continue to be remembered.
