Biography of Ali Abdullah Saleh
Ali Abdullah Saleh was born on March 21, 1942, in the village of Beit al-Ahmar in the province of Sana'a. He was a Shiite Muslim of the Zaidi sect and belonged to the Hashed tribe. At the age of eight, he became a student at an Islamic school in Damar.
Military Career
In 1958, Saleh joined the ranks of the armed forces of Yemen and completed the non-commissioned officer courses. He went on to have a brilliant military career. In 1978, he became a member of the Temporary Presidential Council and the Chief of Staff. On July 17, 1978, at the age of 36, Saleh was elected as the President of the Yemen Arab Republic by the founding People's Assembly.
Political Career
Since 1982, Saleh has been the Secretary-General of the ruling party, the General People's Congress, in Yemen. After the unification of the northern and southern parts of the country in 1990, creating the Yemeni Republic, Ali Abdullah Saleh became the Chairman of the Presidential Council. In 1994, he was re-elected as the President.
President of Yemen
Following the presidential elections held in Yemen, Saleh emerged as the winner and was sworn in as the President for another seven-year term. According to the Higher Electoral Commission, he received 77.17 percent of the votes. Saleh has been leading the country for 28 years, making him the longest-serving president in Yemen's history. Ali Abdullah Saleh is married and has seven sons.
