Early Life and Education

Yury Levada was born on April 5, 1937, in Poltava, Ukrainian SSR. In 1959, he graduated from the Philological Faculty of Tashkent State University with a degree in art history.

Journalistic Career

Levada began his career in journalism in 1959 as an editor at Tashkent TV. From 1960 to 1962, he served as a senior editor at Norilsk TV. From 1965 to 1967, he was a correspondent for the newspaper "Soviet Culture" in Central Asia.

In 1967, Levada joined the magazine "Journalist" as a correspondent. From 1968 to 1972, he worked as a scientific editor for the publishing house "Iskusstvo." From 1972 to 1975, he was an editor of the magazine "Journalist."

Academic and Research

From 1962 to 1965, Levada was a research fellow at the Institute of Art History in Tashkent. From 1975 to 1989, he was a senior research fellow at the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Film Art.

Media Management

In 1989, Levada became the executive secretary of the magazine "Journalist." From 1991 to 1994, he was the director of the Sociological Service of RTRK "Ostankino."

In 1995, Levada became the director of the Sociological Service of ORTV. In 1997, he joined NTV as an advisor to the chief producer on sociology. He later became the head of the Sociological Analysis Service of NTV-Holding and the first deputy general director of ORTV in charge of programming.

Other Activities

Levada was a consultant for the Soros Foundation from 1995 and a co-director of the Russian Commission on Television and Radio from 1995. He was also a member of the editorial board of the weekly newspaper "Obshchaya Gazeta" from 1993 to 1995 and a member of the Council of Guarantors of "Obshchaya Gazeta" from 1995.
