Biography of Vyacheslav Lemeshov

Born on April 3, 1952, Vyacheslav Lemeshov was an outstanding Soviet and Russian amateur boxer. He achieved numerous championships and honors throughout his career.

Early Life and Career

Lemeshov began his boxing journey under the guidance of his first coach, L. Segalovich. At the age of 17, he won the national youth championship in the lightweight division. In 1970 and 1972, he became the European junior champion and became the first recipient of the Emile Gremo Cup, awarded to the most skilled boxer in the European junior championship.

Olympic Success

In 1972, Lemeshov trained under Yuri Radonyak, a silver medalist in the Olympics, and went on to win the gold medal in the middleweight division at the XX Olympic Games in Munich. His remarkable performance included four knockout victories out of five fights. Lemeshov's victory contributed to the Soviet team's overall success, securing their 50th gold medal at the 1972 Olympics.

Fighting Style and Legacy

Lemeshov was known for his agility, precise timing, and powerful punches. His boxing style stood out due to his maneuverability and ability to deliver impactful blows. His exceptional skills and popularity were evident, as his teammate Victor Rybakov recalls, "Slavka Lemeshov was a great boxer and a wonderful person. He was so popular that you couldn't walk with him in Moscow without being stopped at every step. Hockey players were not as popular as he was during his time."

Life after Boxing

After retiring from the ring, Lemeshov embarked on a new chapter of his life in the Soviet Armed Forces Group in Germany. However, he faced difficulties and eventually returned to civilian life. He worked various jobs, including being a pump station operator, a gatekeeper in a cooperative, and a worker at the Vostriakovskoye Cemetery. Sadly, Lemeshov passed away in 1996 at the age of 44, in a state of poverty.
