Hero of Russia: Vyacheslav Mal'yarov

Vyacheslav Mal'yarov (January 10, 1969 - September 3, 2004) is a Hero of Russia who perished in the Beslan siege in 2004. As a senior operational officer in the FSB's Alpha Group, he made the ultimate sacrifice while liberating hostages in a counter-terrorism operation.

Early Life and Sports Achievements

Born in Balakovo, Saratov Oblast, Mal'yarov grew up without a father. Despite his modest physical stature, he excelled in track and field, becoming a formidable hammer thrower. His records still stand in his former school's hall of fame, where no athlete has surpassed his achievements for nearly two decades. He earned the title of Candidate Master of Sports in athletics.

Military Career

In 1986, Mal'yarov enrolled in the Smolensk State Institute of Physical Culture and joined the paratrooper program. He fulfilled his childhood dream by voluntarily joining the Soviet Army after completing his first year.

In 1987, Mal'yarov was deployed to Afghanistan, where he served in the 103rd Reconnaissance Company of the Airborne Division. He was awarded three medals, including the Medal for Courage, for his bravery in combat.

Service in Alpha Group

In April 1996, Mal'yarov joined the FSB's Alpha Group, an elite special forces unit. From 1999 onwards, he participated in numerous missions in the North Caucasus. He played a pivotal role in the liberation of hostages at the Dubrovka Theater Center in 2002.

Heroism in Beslan

On September 1, 2004, terrorists seized over 1100 hostages, mostly children, in Beslan. Explosions erupted in the school's gym, where most of the hostages were being held. As the surviving hostages fled, the FSB's special forces initiated a rescue operation.

Major Mal'yarov, operating inside the school, rescued an injured comrade from terrorist gunfire and provided first aid. He then suppressed the advance of several terrorists, opening fire to protect a large group of hostages.

Despite sustaining a severe wound, Mal'yarov continued fighting, wounding two attackers and forcing them to retreat. He was evacuated to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Posthumous Honors

For his exceptional courage and heroism, Major Vyacheslav Mal'yarov was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, 4th Class. He was laid to rest at the Nikolo-Arkhangelskoye Cemetery in Moscow.

Legacy

Mal'yarov's hometown of Balakovo honored him with the posthumous title of Honorary Citizen. Memorial plaques were unveiled at his former school, now bearing his name, and at the city's sports academy. Annual wrestling tournaments are held in his memory.

In 2009, the documentary "Immortal" chronicled Mal'yarov's heroic actions. In 2015, a street in a new district of Balakovo was named after him.
