Early Life and Education

Vasily Alekseevich Zorkin was born on February 15, 1949, in the Selizharovsky district of the Kalinin Oblast, which is now known as the Tver Oblast. He pursued higher education at the Faculty of Journalism at Leningrad State University (LSU), earning his degree upon graduation.

Journalistic Career

Zorkin embarked on a career in journalism after completing his studies. He held various positions, progressing from correspondent to responsible secretary of a district newspaper in Kalyazin. Subsequently, he served as the editor of a district newspaper in Zubtsov.

Political Involvement

Zorkin's involvement in politics began when he held positions within the Kalinin Regional Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). He worked as an instructor and later as head of the press, radio, and television sector. In 1990, he was appointed editor of the regional trade union newspaper "Pozitsiya."

Leadership Roles

In 1993, Zorkin assumed the role of First Secretary of the Tver Regional Committee (Obkom) of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF). He was elected as a deputy to the Legislative Assembly of the Tver Oblast in 1997, serving until 1999.

Election to the State Duma

In 1999, Zorkin was elected as a deputy to the State Duma on December 19th. He joined the CPRF parliamentary faction in January 2000.
