Early Life and Football Career
Walter Crook was born on April 28, 1913, in Whittle-le-Woods, Lancashire, England. He began his professional football career in 1930 and played for Blackburn Rovers from 1931 onward. From 1934 to the end of World War II, Crook played every league and cup game for Blackburn, a remarkable 208 consecutive appearances that still holds the club record.
During the war, Crook served as a physical training instructor and later became Blackburn's captain. He made 237 appearances and scored two goals for the club before leaving in 1947 after a dispute with manager Eddie Hapgood. Crook then played 28 games for Bolton Wanderers before retiring due to injury in 1948.
Coaching Career
After retiring, Crook became a coach in 1948. His first job was with Ajax in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Ajax was not a top club at the time, and in the 1949/50 season, they won their Western league but finished fourth in the Dutch championship playoffs. Remarquably, Limburguia, the eventual champions, won 0-6 away to Ajax in Amsterdam. Crook resigned after the disappointing season and returned to England.
Accrington Stanley (1951-1953)
In May 1951, Crook became manager of Accrington Stanley. The team had finished 23rd in the 1950/51 season, but Crook was appointed coach-manager in June 1951. In the following season, Accrington improved to 22nd place. In June 1952, Crook became secretary-manager, appointing former Manchester United player Billy Wigglesworth as coach. However, disagreements with the board led to Crook's resignation in February 1953.
Return to Ajax and Wigan Athletic
In July 1953, Crook briefly returned to Ajax, and in 1954, he became manager of Wigan Athletic.
