His professional journey commenced in 2001, when he earned the title of top goalscorer in the Sao Paulo state championship. His impressive performance continued in 2004, as he emerged as the leading scorer in the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A, a feat he repeated in 2008.
Move to Japan and Asian Triumphs
In 2005, Washington made a significant move to Japan, joining Urawa Red Diamonds. His time in Japan was marked by numerous trophies and individual accolades. He played a pivotal role in the team's victory in the 2006 J1 League title and the Emperor's Cup. Additionally, he secured the 2005 and 2006 Japanese Super Cup titles. In 2007, he reached the pinnacle of Asian club football by winning the AFC Champions League with Urawa Red Diamonds.
Return to Brazil and Club Records
After his successful spell in Japan, Washington returned to Brazil and joined Fluminense in 2008. He continued to excel, becoming the tournament's second-highest goalscorer with six goals in the 2008 Copa Libertadores. In 2011, he joined Sao Paulo, but his career was cut short due to health issues. Despite his premature retirement, Washington holds the record for the most goals scored in a single season of the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A, with 34 goals.
