Biography of Wayne Dyer
Wayne Dyer is an American writer, lecturer, and teacher, known for his advocacy of self-development. He currently resides on the island of Maui, Hawaii.

Wayne Dyer was born on May 10, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan, and spent much of his teenage years in a foster home in the eastern part of Detroit. He graduated from Denby High School in 1958 and served in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1962.

He earned his doctorate degree in education from Wayne State University and worked as a school counselor in high schools in Detroit and at St. John's University, a private Catholic university in New York. Initially, Dyer was more interested in pursuing an academic career, publishing articles in journals and running a successful private practice as a psychotherapist. However, his lectures at St. John's University, which focused on positive thinking and motivational speech techniques, attracted not only enrolled students but also a wider audience.

Encouraged by a literary agent, Dyer compiled his ideas and turned them into a book, resulting in the publication of "Your Erroneous Zones" on August 1, 1976. Although initial sales were modest, Dyer left his teaching position and embarked on a promotional tour across the United States, engaging with readers in bookstores and giving numerous interviews in the media. He eventually appeared on national television and was featured on talk shows hosted by Merv Griffin and Phil Donahue. "Your Erroneous Zones" became a New York Times bestseller, remaining on the list for 64 weeks, with over 35 million copies sold to date.
Dyer continued to cultivate his success by giving lectures nationwide, releasing audio recordings of his talks, and regularly publishing new books. His audience extended beyond businessmen, as in the case of Dale Carnegie or Stephen Covey, and his speeches resonated with many supporters of the New Thought movement. Dyer often shared anecdotes from his personal life and consistently used his own experiences as examples. The story of a self-made man who built his career became a significant part of his popularity. Additionally, he criticized the societal focus on guilt, which he saw as an unhealthy attachment to something perfect in the past, hindering one's ability to be happy in the present. Dyer called on readers to recognize how their parents, organizations, and even themselves impose guilt upon them.
Although Dyer generally avoided delving into the spiritual realm, he currently focuses on interpreting the Tao Te Ching. He is frequently invited to give lectures on this subject. In May 2010, a minor scandal arose when writer Stephen Mitchell, husband of lecturer, author, and best-selling author Byron Katie, filed a lawsuit against Dyer, accusing him of plagiarism. Mitchell claimed that Dyer had borrowed 200 lines from his interpretation of the Tao Te Ching, which he included in his books "Living the Wisdom of the Tao" and "Change Your Thoughts - Change Your Life."
Dyer has been married three times, and his third wife, Marcelene Dyer, is the mother of seven of his eight children. He also has an older daughter, Tracy, from his first marriage. All of his children from his marriage to Marcelene live in Florida. In 2009, Dyer announced that he had been diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
