Early Life and Education

Heinz-Otto Grafwas born in Hamburg, Germany, and began his musical journey at an early age. He studied the cello in his hometown before traveling to Paris to refine his technique under the tutelage of renowned cellist Pierre Fournier.

Orchestral Roles

In 1956, Graf joined the Hannover Opera as its principal cellist, a position he held until 1958. During this time, he honed his orchestral skills and gained valuable experience.

Academic and Ensemble Pursuits

In 1958, Graf embarked on his academic career, teaching at the Vienna Academy of Music. A year later, he founded and led the renowned chamber ensemble "Vienna Soloists." Graf's passion for both music and education shone through in his dedicated work with young musicians.

Professorship and Conducting

From 1965 to 1967, Graf served as a professor of cello and chamber music at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre. In 1967, he ascended to the role of Chief Conductor of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, leading the ensemble to critical acclaim during his four-year tenure.

Guest Conducting

Beyond his duties with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, Graf was also invited to conduct various ensembles, including the "Norddeutsche Sinfonieorchester" (North German Symphony Orchestra). His musical expertise and charisma extended to guest appearances on international stages.
