Early Life and Career
William "Will" Emerson Arnett was born on May 5, 1970, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The son of Alexandra and James Arnett, he graduated from Leaside High School in Ontario. He attended Concordia University in Montreal for a semester before dropping out.
Encouraged by his mother to pursue acting, Arnett auditioned for a commercial in Toronto during his teenage years. In 1990, at the age of 20, he moved from Toronto to New York City to study acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. Arnett made his acting debut in an independent film shot on Lake Erie.
Rise to Success
In 1996, Arnett starred in the unaired CBS pilot "Lucy Webb" alongside Kevin Pollak and his wife. He also appeared in the short-lived shows "The Underworld" and "The Mike O'Malley Show." He had small roles in the films "Ed's Next Move" (1996), "Close Up" (1996), "Southie" (1998), "Weekend Getaway" (1998), and "The Broken Giant" (1998).
Arnett's breakthrough role came in 2003 when he landed the part of George Oscar Bluth II in the Emmy-nominated comedy series "Arrested Development." His character became one of the most popular in the show, which ran for three seasons from 2003 to 2006. Despite its cancellation due to low ratings, "Arrested Development" received critical acclaim and a cult following.
Film and Television Roles
Following the success of "Arrested Development," Arnett's career took off. He starred in the comedy "The Waiting Game" (1999) and played dramatic roles in "The Acting Class" (2000) and "Undefeated" (2003). He became known for playing self-satisfied villains in comedic films such as "The Great New Wonderful" (2005), "Monster-in-Law" (2005), "Let's Go to Prison" (2006), "RV" (2006), "Blades of Glory" (2007), "The Brothers Solomon" (2007), and "The Comebacks" (2007).
Arnett also provided voiceovers for numerous animated films, including "Ice Age: The Meltdown" (2006), "Ratatouille" (2007), "Horton Hears a Who!" (2008), and "Monsters vs. Aliens" (2009). He made guest appearances in popular TV shows such as "King of the Hill" and "30 Rock."
Personal Life
Arnett was married to actress Penelope Ann Miller from 1994 to 1995. In 2003, he married comedian Amy Poehler. The couple have two sons, Archie and Abel. Arnett is also the stepfather to Poehler's son, James.
Prior to his acting career, Arnett worked as a corporate lawyer and president of Molson Breweries from 1997 to 2000.
