Early Career and NBA Debut
American professional basketball player Will Bynum played as a point guard for the Yesilgiresun club. After attending the University of Arizona for two years, he transferred to the Georgia Institute of Technology. Despite declaring for the 2005 NBA draft, Bynum went undrafted. He signed with the Boston Celtics as a free agent in the 2005 offseason but was waived before the season began.
Bynum spent the first half of the 2005-06 season with the Roanoke Dazzle of the Development League, earning Rookie of the Year honors. He played 15 NBA games with the Golden State Warriors later that season.
Israeli Success and Return to the NBA
In 2006, Bynum joined the Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he played for two seasons. He won the Israeli championship in 2007. He returned to the NBA in 2008 as a member of the Detroit Pistons.
Pistons Success and Record-Setting Performances
On April 5, 2009, Bynum set a franchise record by scoring 26 points in the fourth quarter against the Charlotte Bobcats, leading Detroit to a 104-97 victory. He finished with 32 points that night. On March 12, 2010, Bynum dished out a career-high 20 assists against the Washington Wizards, helping Detroit win 101-87. This marked the first time a Pistons player had recorded 20 or more assists in a game since Isiah Thomas against the same Washington team on April 12, 1985.
Later Career and International Experience
After signing a three-year contract extension with Detroit on July 30, 2010, Bynum signed another two-year, $5.75 million contract on July 16, 2013. He was traded to the Boston Celtics for Joel Anthony on October 17, 2014, but was waived ten days later.
Bynum joined the Chinese Basketball Association's Guangdong Southern Tigers on December 5, 2014. After playing 30 games, averaging 22.3 points, 7.1 assists, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game in 31.1 minutes, Bynum signed a 10-day contract with the Washington Wizards on March 27, 2015. He signed with the Wizards for the rest of the season on April 6.
In August 2015, Bynum returned to China and signed a second contract with the Guangdong Southern Tigers. Over 29 games, he averaged 17.8 points, 6.5 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.3 steals in 34.4 minutes.
Bynum signed with the Atlanta Hawks on September 20, 2016, but was waived after seven games on October 21. He was acquired by the Windy City Bulls on December 23 and made his debut on December 31, 2016. In 36 minutes, he recorded 20 points, 10 assists, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals in a 117-106 loss to the Maine Red Claws.
Post-NBA Career
Bynum was selected by the Erie BayHawks in the 2017 NBA Development League expansion draft on August 23, 2017.
