Birth and Family
William Cavendish was born on December 14, 1748, to William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire, and Charlotte Boyle, 6th Baroness Clifford. As the eldest son, Cavendish became the 5th Duke of Devonshire upon his father's death in 1764.
Political Career
Despite being offered positions in the cabinet on three separate occasions, Cavendish declined each offer due to his reluctance to engage in political life. Instead, he held various ceremonial positions, including Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire, Governor of County Cork, and Lord Treasurer of Ireland.
Marriage and Love Triangle
Cavendish married twice. His first wife was the renowned fashion icon and socialite, Georgiana Spencer. Their marriage was marred by infidelity and the presence of Elizabeth Foster, a close friend of Georgiana who became Cavendish's mistress. Foster later married Cavendish after Georgiana's death. The complex love triangle between the trio was a subject of fascination and gossip among the British elite.
European Travels and Grand Portraits
During his youth, Cavendish embarked on a Grand Tour of Europe with William Fitzherbert. While in Italy, they commissioned two renowned portraits by Pompeo Batoni. These portraits became symbols of Cavendish's wealth and status.
Development of Buxton
Cavendish played a significant role in the development of the spa town of Buxton. He invested profits from copper mines to transform Buxton into an elegant resort, rivaling the grandeur of Bath.
Descendants and Legacy
Cavendish had one son, William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire, with Georgiana. He also had two illegitimate children: Augustus Clifford (by Charlotte Spencer) and Caroline St. Jules (by Elizabeth Foster). Cavendish died on July 29, 1811, at the age of 62. He was succeeded by his son, who earned the nickname "Lord Bachelor" for remaining unmarried throughout his life.
In Popular Culture
The life of Georgiana and the love triangle with Cavendish and Foster was depicted in the 2008 film "The Duchess," starring Ralph Fiennes as Cavendish. The film showcased the complex dynamics and social mores of British high society in the 18th century.
