After graduating high school, she pursued a degree in law at the University of Helsinki, graduating in 1980.
Political Beginnings
During her university years, Jäätteenmäki became actively involved in student politics. She joined the University's Student Union and later completed courses at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1987, she was elected to the Finnish Parliament from the Finnish Centre Party, marking the start of her parliamentary career.
Rise in the Centre Party
Jäätteenmäki rose through the ranks of the Centre Party, serving as the deputy chairperson of its parliamentary group from 1991-1994. In 1999, she became the party's chairperson. Her leadership coincided with a period of political upheaval in Finland, as the long-time ruling Social Democrats were defeated in the 1991 parliamentary elections.
Decline of Premiership and Legacy
In 2003, the Centre Party emerged victorious in the parliamentary elections. Jäätteenmäki was initially considered for the position of Prime Minister. However, she reportedly declined due to her modesty. Instead, she chose to serve as Speaker of Parliament, leading the legislative body rather than the cabinet.
